These dogs were bred for bringing game. The need for a specialized dog emerged in the 19th century when hunters started to use guns and there were no dogs suited for finding and fetching killed and wounded game. Training other hunting breeds to perform this task was not successful. To excel in fetching game, dogs should have a soft mouth and a good sense of smell. Besides, these dogs have to be well balanced, small enough to fit the boat, yet large and strong enough to bring the game. Newfoundland, Setter, and other breeds were crossed to produce a new breed.

This is one of the most versatile breeds known; its only disadvantage is lack of aggressiveness, which makes the breed unsuitable for guarding and protection. They are excellent hunting companions and can smell and retrieve killed game on both land and water. They can detect drugs and poisonous agents, find people in avalanches and ruins and work as guide dogs for the blind and therapy dogs for the disabled.
