GHGRC is the AKC-sanctioned breed club located in Texas. It was created in 1991 and since that time it helped hundreds of abandoned and abused dogs find adoptive homes. There are many dogs, which need special medical treatment. They are practically unadoptable. Such animals may spend the rest of their lives in the sanctuary and require constant care. Everybody is welcome to sponsor such dogs instead of adopting or fostering it. To reduce the problem of unwanted pets’ overpopulation all animals are spayed or neutered.

Some enthusiasts of the breed believe that growing popularity of these dogs is detrimental to the general health and temperament of the breed, because of breeding poor quality dogs for profit. All reputable breeders are registered by one of the breed clubs and are expected to conform to their rules and breed in accordance to the standard. Breed clubs promote responsible breeding and educate the public on the breed. Besides, breed clubs hold special events and competitions for purebreds. The main club for the breed fanciers in the USA is the GRCA. It operates in the ward of the AKC and follows its standard.
