This breed is a good example of the “all around dog,” as it can perform a lot of functions. The original purpose of the breed was to accompany hunters and retrieve the game both from water and land. Today, these dogs are used as guides and assistance animals. Due to their desire to please and excellent working abilities, these dogs do well at field trials, agility, obedience and conformation. Also this breed is one of the best family dogs for active people. It just cannot be watchdogs and lap dogs.

According to the current breed standard, the height of the breed varies between 22 and 24 inches and the weight can vary from 55 to 75 pounds. Overall balance and health are more important than conformation in these working dogs. The main beauty of the breed is its bright and lustrous coat with a dense undercoat. The head of these dogs is broad and slightly arched; the muzzle is straight, with a well defined stop. The breed standard changed several times since the origin of the breed; early dogs had little in common with their predecessors.
