Due to a great popularity of Golden Retrievers associated with its use in a variety of activities and its capability of making wonderful pets, producing these dogs has become a way of making a living for many people. Irresponsible breeders who care little for the requirements in the breeding business may damage the population of the breed by producing dogs with poor health and temperament. Therefore, all Golden Retriever owners should acquire breed information prior to buying or breeding a dog.
If you are new to the breed, you are advised to contact breed clubs to acquire breed education. Also, books on the Golden Retriever will help you decide if it is the right breed for you and make you aware of the temperament and health disorders common in the breed. The Golden Retriever Club of America is the parent club for all breed organizations in the United States. It has a lot of information concerning how to choose a puppy and how to care for it from the first days at your home.
According to the Golden Retriever Club of America, pet stores and hobby breeders are not the best source where one can obtain a puppy. Pet stores do not take effort to care for the puppies that they produce since their aim is "to sell the more puppies the better." Hobby breeders, in their turn, do not have enough knowledge on the breeding business and may choose a wrong mating pair or underestimate the importance of regular screening.
It is agreed that a puppy should be bought from breeders who have been involved with Golden Retrievers for a number of years and have earned the reputation as being knowledgeable on the breeding business. They usually have OFA and CERF certificates that confirm that their dogs are free of genetic disorders. They will also provide information on training and care for Golden Retrievers.
