Golden Retrievers Puppy - History

Golden Retrievers originated in Great Britain where they were bred to make merry companions and serve as game retrieving dogs. The breed is believed to have the bloodline of the now extinct Tweed Water Spaniel, Newfoundland, Irish Setter, and some other spaniels. Lord Tweedmouth is possibly the most famous person known for his contribution to the development of the breed. In the breeding, he strived to stress the loving temperament and a high extent of its agility.

The ancestors of the breed we know today were shown in Great Britain under the name of Flat-Coated Retrievers. The Golden Retriever is said to have made its way to the United States in the 1890's, yet they did not start to be exhibited until the 1920's. In the early history of the Golden Retriever, the dog was used mostly for hunting. The breed made a good waterfowl-retrieving dog. However, as Golden Retrievers gained popularity, they started to be used as pets and show companions.

The coat color of the early Golden Retrievers differs a little from the dogs that are common today. Earlier, preference was given to dark colors that were almost red. Nowadays, breeders and owners of Golden Retrievers prefer to have creamy to golden colored dogs.
